One of my favorite creatures found in my garden is the lowly toad.  The little dirt colored, unassuming, gardener’s helper is the inspiration for The Garden Toad series.  Each sculpture is created with many polymer clay art techniques and uses a flower garden theme to adorn the toad.   There is no painting involved.  All patterns, colors, and designs are made with polymer clay.  Using a “palette” of colored clay, I mix and blend colors, create designs for patterns, and build each small image individually.  This is a painstaking process where a single image can take up to two or more hours to create.  The Garden Toad series can feature fifteen or more different images on each sculpture. You may see pansies, impatiens, daisies, sunflowers, leaves, lady bugs, or a koi pond.   Once all the small images have been carefully applied to the base sculpture in the desired pattern, it is hardened by heat, cooled, and then wet sanded with a progressively finer grit to make it as smooth as possible.  Finally, it is sealed or varnished.  Each sculpture is a unique, one of a kind creation.  I consider the Garden Toads my signature series.
