The inspiration for this subject goes back to my childhood. Most people in this part of the country have seen Box Turtles. However, who has seen a hatchling? They are very difficult to spot! I found one as a child on the farm where I grew up. Its shell was about the size of a fifty cent piece. It was so perfectly formed and still so small. I’ve never seen another since, even though I live in the woods and see many adult box turtles in my yard. This series features a shell with my rendition of a tortoise shell pattern, surrounded by a ring of sunflowers. The bottom carapace is stylized suns. The “pebbled” skin features tiny sunflowers that are only noticed on a close inspection. I tried to capture the sweet face of a youngster. |

Number two in a series of four features a tortoiseshell pattern with backbone “buttons” of sunflowers. Each box turtle has a millefiori of earth toned spots and sunflowers for the skin. |
Number three in a series of four has a colorful trimmed shell, with more sunflowers on the top and bottom of the shell. This one is just peaking out of the shell. |
Number four in a series of four is a highly polished shell, colorful turtle neck and trim around carapace. |
